Lyrics

All through the night
I'll be standing over you

And through the dreams, I'll be
Right there, baby, telling you
Everything is gonna be all right
And when you cry I'll
Be there, baby, telling you
You were never nothing less than beautiful

Jewel’s angelic voice on this song is a lullaby meant to soothe herself to sleep. This level of self-comfort and self-love is a beautiful work of art.

lullaby; a soothing song sung to comfort and put someone to sleep

Oxford Languages

Typically I've had difficulty in the studio. I don't sing as raw, it's just a bit more tame. I'm a live singer who's always fed off the energy of the audience. In a studio, you're just looking at a wall—it feels very odd to me. I've been a live performer since I was six years old. The reason I recorded the album live with the band was so that I could play guitar, which I usually never do in the studio, while I sing at the same time. The band was accustomed to following singer-songwriters and feeling for me slowing down and speeding up. It has a real ebb and a flow and a naturalness that didn't inhibit my singing or performance."

Critics had mixed reactions to Jewel's first album, Pieces of You, with some finding it "wimpily produced" and "cringe-inducing" due to its simple folk-pop style and earnest, sometimes juvenile lyrics, while others saw it as a meaningful and authentic album that resonated with its target audience, particularly during the rise of female singer-songwriters in the 1990s.

As a songwriter myself, I always look for lyrics I wish I’d written. In this song, it’s the line; You were never nothing less than beautiful”.

This is an affirmation. To say this to yourself, and take it in, really feel it, is powerful.

The way we talk to ourselves, and to those we love, is powerful. That’s why I created a free guide called four conversation starters to strengthen your relationship to share with you. In the guide I also share more about who I am as a Life Coach and the rewarding work I’m able to do.

Let’s go deeper into the concept of self-care, self-comfort and self-love.

In stressful times, self-soothing is important, especially if you’re subject to getting overwhelmed. Here are some ideas;

1. Take three slow, deep breaths. Want to try that now?

2. Have a massage, even if it’s just to gently run your fingers over your other hand. Or use an electric massager.

3. Picture your most comforting image: for example, a fern-lined creek, clouds floating, a baby sleeping..

4. Listen to your favorite comforting music, perhaps something that has sentimental significance for you, like something you danced to or that your parent used to sing to you.

5. Look at your photos..

6. Hug yourself, a stuffed animal, or, yes, someone.

7. Look at a flower.

8. Stare at a fireplace. Don’t have one? YouTube has videos of crackling fireplaces as well as aquariums that are accompanied by comforting music.

9. Swaddle yourself in a blanket, maybe a weighted blanket. Some people say it feels like a hug.

10. Curl up in a comfy chair, maybe even a rocking chair.

11. Escape with a book, maybe in the aforementioned chair.

12. Write in your journal. Or work on a blog post, article, or even that would-be Great American novel.

13. Take a walk, perhaps in nature.

14. Take a shower or bath, maybe even a bubble bath.

15. Do something crafty: draw, knit, take photos, whatever.

16. Savor your daily routine, perhaps just your bedtime or morning ritual.

17. Savor your favorite hard candy.

18. Meditate.

19. Do yoga.

20. Think of or even picture something you’re looking forward to.
