Lyrics
Anything for you
Though you’re not here
Since you said we’re through
It seems like years
Time keeps dragging on and on
And forever’s been and gone
Still I can’t figure what went wrong
My favorite lyrics in this song is “forever’s been and gone” what a beautiful way to say a lot of time has passed while still holding this space.
According to Songfacts; Gloria Estefan's "Anything For You" is a big heartbreak ballad about how hard it is to let go during the emotional upheaval of a dying relationship. It was her first #1 hit, topping the chart for two weeks in May 1988.
Learn from the experience
There are gifts in every expired relationship. They’re called lessons. These lessons will be the branches that pull you out of your quicksand. Although extremely painful, what’s produced from your collision are diamonds, revelations about yourself, other people, relationships, the world. This is extremely valuable.
If you don’t choose to look at it, take it, embrace it, you’re throwing away something that can’t be replaced. It’s difficult to see what you’ve learned about yourself after a relationship is over. It’s difficult to examine your contribution to why it expired. This requires taking responsibility, and many refuse to do that.
But it’s also the beginning of the growth process. The more diamonds (revelations) you collect, the more valuable this expiration becomes and the more you realize it was meant to expire. The more of this, and the easier it will be to accept and let go.
Lyrics
And I’d do anything for you
In spite of it all
I’ve learned so much from you
You made me strong
But don’t you ever think that I don’t love you
That for one minute I forgot you
But sometimes things don’t work out right
And you just have to say goodbye
Estefan had famously been married to Miami Sound Machine founder Emilio Estefan Jr., for 10 years when she wrote this song, and fans wondered how this supposedly happily married singer could write such a heart-wrenching ballad about love gone wrong. She explained to Billboard in 1988:
“I think that’s where the artist uses his creative license. I might have experienced these feelings awhile back or maybe vicariously through somebody else, maybe friends of mine who have gone through a similar thing. I think the artist always writes from within, from the soul, and even if you didn’t experience it yourself, you have to feel how would people in this situation feel, and how would they say it. I always try to write very conversationally, and think how would someone want to say it to someone else and then I try to make it more musical.”
Lyrics
I hope you find someone to please you
Someone who’ll care and never leave you
But if that someone ever hurts you
You just might need a friend to turn to

Fun Fact Trivia:
This song was released as a single with an unusual A Side/B Side combination. What was it?
Answer: The A-side of the single contained a longer fade than the version on the album. The B-side of the single was a Spanglish version of the song, with Estefan alternating the verses and chorus between English and Spanish.
On a personal note:
This song was the first pop song I learned in Spanish. I loved belting it out into my hairbrush! Good times!
“Que a veces el amor no es lo que esperas
Hay que savarlo como puedas
Y si no hay uno otra solución
Pues es mejor decir adiós”
