Lyrics

I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you

Written in 1994 by Marcus Hummon, Bobby Boyd, and Jeff Hanna, “Bless the Broken Road” tells how the journey through relationship heartbreak and disappointment was an important series of lessons along the broken road to finding one’s true love.

Tips for finding true love (BetterHelp)

Despite its complexity, true love can capture a universal sentiment that has inspired a sense of wonder for a large part of human history, enduring in nearly every culture around the world and throughout time.

  1. Don't seek romance; look for partnership.

  2. Be yourself, always.

  3. Don't put too much pressure on yourself or the relationship.

  4. Take things slowly—don't rush into anything.

  5. Keep an open mind and communicate honestly with your partner.

  6. Spend time together doing something you both enjoy.

I’ve had the privilege of coaching many young adults as they navigate new relationships.

I like to ask them about the energy of the relationship. Is it positive, growing, kind, enjoyable, open, honest and loving?

Do you like who you are when you are with them?

I encourage them to take each step of the relationship carefully and watch for any issues that they cannot navigate together. If every step is met with a green light, continue to move forward.

First loves are rarely forever loves.

Lyrics

That every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart, they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

All love is meaningful in our lives. I like the analogy of the “Northern Stars” in these lyrics. Those relationships were meant to be part of the life experience that taught the lessons necessary to grow into the person who is ready for their true love.

According to AI Overview, some believe that love can be both a feeling and choice, and that destiny can play a role in relationships.

Love is a feeling and a choice

Love can cause physiological changes in the brain, but people can still choose whether to end or continue a relationship. For example, choosing to work through conflict with a partner can be a sign of choosing to love them.

Destiny can play a role

Some believe that people have someone destined for them in their lives, and that their karma determines their destiny. For example, some believe that if someone has created good karma in relation to their life partner, they are destined to have a good partner. However, others say that even if a union is predestined, people still need to put in effort to make it possible.

Relationships offer a lot of benefits. The more connections you have, the more able you are to get things done. You are able to achieve more in this life. You create more spiritual energy by extending yourself to more people. Another great thing relationships do for us is they expose our fears and weaknesses. They tear down every defense.

This might be one of the best arguments for marriage. In marriage, over time, you and your partner will become polarized and expose each other’s biggest core fear. In marriage there is a commitment and promise to figure this out together. You have to face the music. You have to face your weaknesses and become a whole human being by going through this painful process. If there were no such thing as marriage, people would date others who stroke their ego but once things got difficult, exposing their core fears, the partners would leave one another.

How deeply would we grow with that system?
