This is such a happy song, I definitely dance around the kitchen to this one!
I hadn’t heard of Tegan & Sara until they opened for Katy Perry on her tour in 2014 and I took my teen daughters for the incredible show! On stage their energy and intensity were contagious! I was an instant fan!
The song finds Tegan harking back to her teen romances. She explained to Rolling Stone: "Although I do imagine that this would be an okay song to make out to, all I intended was to write something sweet that reminded the listener of a time before sex, complicated relationships, drama and heart break. In short, I was writing about my youth. A time when we got closer by linking arms and walking down our school hallway or talked all night on the telephone about every thought or experience we'd ever had. It wasn't necessarily even about hooking up or admitting your feelings back then."
"In fact that rarely happened," she continued. "It was the anticipation of something maybe happening that was truly exciting and satisfying. We were perpetually getting closer, yet we rarely got physical with one another, if ever. These relationships existed in a state of sexual and physical ambiguity. Is there anything more romantic than that?"

This song is about naive, young love and that’s why I think the contradiction is appropriate. After a few pick up lines and it’s like “Okay, I’m into you, let’s do this”.
Funny thing is that Tegan admitted that confessing feelings was rarely the case in her youth. Feelings, desires, connection, even love can be expressed in many, many ways.
Confessing your love, which signals a future commitment, can be expressed verbally, though more so through actual behavior, since deeds speak louder than words.

A happy love song that celebrates those early moments in a connection. The song, and these moments, are most enjoyable! It’s no wonder this song won single of the year at the 2014 Juno Awards.
