Lyrics
Do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart
How the music can free her, whenever it starts
And it's magic, if the music is groovy
It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie
I'll tell you about the magic, and it'll free your soul
But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout rock and roll
According to the lyrics, the magic referenced in the title is the power of music to supply happiness and freedom to both those who make it and those who listen to it. (Wikipedia)
Cash Box described it as a "rollicking, teen-angled romancer with an infectious danceable riff.”
I chose Shaun Cassidy’s cover because I believe it captures the rich, full, fun sound of this bubble-gum pop song. I think Shaun’s velvety voice does it justice.
I also chose this version because when it came out, I was a music-loving 8-year old kid who was happy to play this LP on the living room console and dance along with my two best friends. After all, the lyrics are talking about he magic in a young girl’s heart, yes, I believe!
Listening to music soothes the body, mind, and soul. As the poet and author Berthold Auerbach once stated, “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
We’ve all heard the idiom, “Music is good for the soul.” But according to the evidence, it’s good for your health as well.
Study after study has found that music therapy has a positive effect on a broad range of physical and psychological conditions including dementia, anxiety, depression, and cancer.
magic; the power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces
Lyrics
If you believe in magic, come along with me
We'll dance until morning 'til there's just you and me
And maybe, if the music is right
I'll meet you tomorrow, sort of late at night
And we'll go dancing, baby, then you'll see
How the magic's in the music and the music's in me
“The magic’s in the music and the music’s in me”, add that to my ‘lyrics I wish I’d written’ list. Nice.

Fun Fact Trivia:
“Do you believe in magic” was written, and first recorded by the American folk-rock band The Lovin’ Spoonful in 1965. Who was the inspiration for this song?
Answer: John Sebastian composed this song in May 1965. He drew inspiration from a teenage girl who attended one of the Lovin’ Spoonful’s performances at the Night Owl Cafe, a club in Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City at which the band were then holding a residency. The younger girl stood in contrast to the older beatnik crowd who typically attended folk performances, and Sebastian recalled that “she was dancing like we danced, and not like the last generation danced. That young girl symbolized the fact that our audience was changing, and maybe they had found us.” (Wikipedia)
