Lyrics

I know this pain
Why do you lock yourself up in these chains?
No one can change your life except for you
Don't ever let anyone step all over you
Just open your heart and your mind
Is it really fair to feel, this way inside?

This song is written from the perspective of personal resilience. I believe this message also applies to supporting your romantic partner’s obstacles in life.

Overcoming setbacks in life is one of the best ways to accomplish personal growth, how much better is it when you navigate as a couple? There is so much to be discovered and shared!

When life throws challenges at you or your sweetheart, resilience as a couple allows you to lean on each other for emotional support and encouragement, fostering a deeper connection.

Fighting in the trenches together, what a meaningful way to show love.

Grit helps make individuals more resilient. While resilience focuses on what a person does after experiencing failure or struggles, grit focuses on courage and the resolve to put forth effort to achieve a goal, sometimes in the face of adversity.

Research consistently identifies the benefits of resilience. For example, a recent study found greater resilience was associated with less anxiety and depression, greater life satisfaction, and psychological well-being

by Gary W. Lewandowski Jr. Ph.D. “The Psychology of Relationships”

Resilience: the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.

Oxford Languages

Suffering causes us to face our fears. The experience is incredibly educational and makes you look at weaknesses that you would not face and work through otherwise. It drives you to a new level of self-mastery, of faith, of all kinds of love, forgiveness, acceptance, tolerance and deep spiritual principles. Fears block out spiritual energy.

Growth through suffering knocks out the fear that blocks out spiritual energy.

Even suffering in life, we can find beauty in it.

The tight harmonies in “Hold on” are Wilson Phillips signature gold sound.

In 2020, Tony L. Smith from Cleveland.com wrote, "A decade or two ago, Wilson Phillips' inspirational anthem "Hold On" wasn't regarded as anything more than a cheesy (maybe the cheesiest) pop song from the Nineties. But opinions change. For a generation big on nostalgia, it gets no bigger than "Hold On", a song that has good times written all over it.

The Baltimore Sun complimented this song as "a tough-but-tuneful paean to self-reliance" and "irresistibly catchy".

Lyrics

Some day somebody's gonna make you want to turn around and say goodbye
Until then, baby, are you going to let 'em hold you down and make you cry?
Don't you know?
Don't you know, things can change
Things'll go your way
If you hold... on for one more day

Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are; something to do, someone to love, and something to hope for.

Joseph Addison

Lyrics

You could sustain
Or are you comfortable with the pain?
You've got no one to blame for your unhappiness
You got yourself into your own mess
Lettin' your worries pass you by
Baby, don't you think it's worth your time
To change your mind?

Picture this:

Four college-aged women on a road trip to visit a mutual friend. The album “Wilson Phillips” had just come out. Knowing every single lyric, of every single song on the album, these women sang at the top of their lungs, the messages of love, hope, and possibilities at the top of their lungs, out on the open road, with all the windows rolled down!

That was us, the “Valentine Girls”, on Spring Break in 1990. I wanted to do this song this week in honor of our dear Kristie, who passed away this time last year. The four of us have been friends since we were teenagers. We have gone through every big life event together. Our daughters are best friends. This song will forever remind me of our friendships.

So, Cheers to Resilience! Cheers to Hope! Cheers to Friendship! Cheers to everyone, “Hold on for one more day!”

Think about this…

Do you show support and encouragement on your sweethearts toughest days?

What is one way that you can “hold on” for one more day?

Do you see yourself as a strong warrior able to face your biggest hardships?
