In this soft rock ballad, a lonely Phil Collins pleads with his lover to give him just one more night to prove his devotion. Phil Collins isn’t trying to be a downer and says the lyrics “are more optimistic in a warm way rather than depressing in a negative way.”
A Phil Collins fan stated: In concert, I heard Mr. Collins explain that this song is NOT about trying to get an old lover back. Instead, it's a fella after a not so great first date, attempting to get "one more night" or really, one more date to "prove that he could be the guy.". At the very least, to redeem himself for an unexecptionable first date.
This is his best song for me...the longing in every note. What is more poignant than love escaping through your fingers?

As for me, I find this bridge is hauntingly beautiful. I love the imagery, the flow of energy and the commitment statement itself.
It’s a rare, conscious person who takes responsibility for thier life. That person says, “I’m going to put the time into analyzing this and always strive for a more intelligent way to live.”

He explained that he was playing around with the machine when inspiration hit: "I had a tempo in mind. I was thinking of one of the Jacksons' songs (“One more chance”) actually when I strung a chorus on it. The line 'one more night' just fit what I was playing. The rest of the song was written very quickly."“
