Lyrics

I know you know
It felt just like a joke
I'm sure you don't know we're talkin'
I know your ghost
I see her through the smoke
She'll play her show and you'll be watchin'

And if history's clear, someone always ends up in ruins
And what seemed like fate becomes "What the hell was I doin'?"
Babylon lovers hangin', lifetimes on a vine (ooh)
Do you miss mine?

Songfacts states; Taylor Swift joins Gracie Abrams for this mournful indie-pop postmortem on a love affair gone south. Both singers are like lovelorn detectives piecing together the fragments of their union. They grapple with a potent mix of regret and longing, questioning if their exes miss their relationship like they do.

Missing a past love is a normal, often powerful experience rooted in deep attachment, sometimes feeling like withdrawl from an addiction, involving lingering emotional bonds, and often fueled by idealizing the past.

by Gary W. Lewandowski Jr. Ph.D. “Letting go takes time: The Science of Missing an Ex”

Lyrics

Do you miss us, us?
I felt it, you held it
Do you miss us, us?
Wonder if you regret the secret
Of us, us

This is what Gracie Abrams said about writing “Us”;

Gracie Abrams called writing “Us" with Taylor Swift, "some of the most fun I've ever had," describing it as a spontaneous, wine-fueled late-night session after a long dinner, resulting from a shared musical spark, and emphasizing the genuine, vulnerable connection that led to the track about a past, secret relationship. She expressed awe and gratitude for collaborating with her idol, calling it a dream come true and a highlight of her career, learning from Swift's artistry and business acumen

  • Writing Process: It was born from a long, fun dinner and late-night songwriting at Swift's house, inspired by a shared musical moment, much like how she wrote other songs for the album with her best friend.

  • Feeling & Meaning: She's "smiling and sweating" thinking about it and loves the blend of both their styles, feeling it captures a past, intense relationship with both beauty and pain.

  • Collaboration with Taylor: She calls it a dream come true, highlighting Swift's passion and setting a high bar for her own work, seeing it as a significant milestone and a masterclass in music and business.

  • Inspiration: The song explores the emotional complexities of a secret, intimate relationship, with lyrical themes similar to Swift's "All Too Well," exploring love, betrayal, and memory.

This is what Taylor Swift said about writing “Us”;

  • Origin Story: Swift recounted that they were just hanging out, drinking wine, and discussing Abrams' experiences, which naturally turned into the song's lyrics.

  • Chaotic Fun: Abrams shared that the songwriting night was a mix of emotional vulnerability and playful chaos, even involving a small kitchen fire (which Swift put out with a fire extinguiser).

  • Surprise Performance: Swift brought Abrams out during her Eras Tour in London to perform "us." live for the first time, playing guitar while Abrams played piano.

  • Mutual Support: Both artists emphasize their strong bond, with Swift praising Abrams as an artist and Abrams calling Swift a huge inspiration and incredibly supportive friend.

Perspective is a choice.

A positive attitude is not a switch you can turn off and on. You have to practice it on a daily basis. If you are a praying, or meditation person, there are two important things to focus on everyday. In the morning you pray for strength to face the battles ahead of you. At night, with gratitude in your heart, you pray to be healed so that you are prepared for the next day’s battle.

Lyrics

That night you were talkin' (ooh)
False prophets and profits
They makin' the margins
Of poetry sonnets (oh)

You never read upon it
Shame, could've learned something
Robert Bly on my nightstand
Gifts from you, how ironic!

The curse of a miracle
Curse of an oracle
You're incomparable, f-
It was chemical
You (plus me was)

This bridge is filled with razor-sharp lyrics, word play, wishful thinking and wresting with the gifts and curse that were the relationship. So relatable. Thank you Gracie and Taylor for the cathartic journey knowing that even a ruined relationship can be poetic, passionate and even celebrated.

Look at your relationship with new, spiritual eyes. Every thing in life has beauty if you are willing to observe closely.
