Lyrics

Slow down, you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart, well, tell me
Why are you still so afraid? Mm
Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You'd better cool it off before you burn it out
You've got so much to do
And only so many hours in a day

This is a self-love song, a reminder to have a life-long investment in yourself and your passion. It is also a reminder to be mindful and careful along the way.

This song always takes my breath away. The lyrics mean so much because to me, everybody's version of "Vienna" is different. We reach a point in our youth where we're "so ambitious for a juvenile". Those ambitions can often times lead young people who have not yet acquired discernment, wisdom and self control to go way too fast down roads that they shouldn't. If they slow down, think, take a close look at what they're doing and the decisions they're making, they'll be able to see that yes, Vienna is waiting for them. Vienna doesn't have to be elaborate or extravagant but once one arrives there, it's home. Arriving there may involve taking the phone off the hook and disappearing for a while. Don't get so ahead of yourself that you forget what you need. Silence the distractions so that you can make good choices that land you ultimately in your "Vienna" and enjoy life in each stage.

I just wanna join everyone here who express their love to this song. Vienna is also my favorite song, and I'm a person usually without a "favorite" list. It's just so comforting on so many levels. I went to a Billy Joel concert a few weeks ago, because I can finally afford it. When he started singing Vienna, I just couldn't stop crying. This song means so much to me.

Lyrics

But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through, ooh
When will you realize Vienna waits for you?

You've got your passion, you've got your pride
But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true, ooh
When will you realize Vienna waits for you?

According to Wikipedia, Billy Joel had this to say about this song;

"You don't have to squeeze your whole life into your 20s and 30s trying to make it, trying to achieve that American dream, getting in the rat race and killing yourself. You have a whole life to live. I kind of used 'Vienna' as a metaphor, there is a reason for being old, a purpose".

He also said: "We treat old people in this country pretty badly. We put them in rest homes, we kinda kick them under the rug and make believe they don’t exist. They [the people in Vienna] don’t feel like that. In a lot of these older places in the world, they value their older people and their older people feel they can still be a part of the community and I thought 'This is a terrific idea' – that old people are useful – and that means I don’t have to worry so much about getting old because I can still have a use in this world in my old age. I thought 'Vienna waits for you’…

Such a beautiful perspective.

Every morning I start my day with my “hour of power”, quiet time dedicated to getting my heart, mind and spirit on the right track. This process is something my mentor taught me 16 years ago, using my time for deep meditation and sincere prayer. This helps me channel and share energy in the most important areas of my life; romance, friendships, health, creativity, finances, and spiritual growth. Perspective is a choice.

A positive attitude is not a switch you can turn off and on. You have to practice it on a daily basis. If you are a praying, or meditation person, there are two important things to focus on everyday. In the morning you pray for strength to face the battles ahead of you. At night, with gratitude in your heart, you pray to be healed so that you are prepared for the next day’s battle.

Lyrics

Slow down, you're doin' fine
You can't be everything you wanna be before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline
Tonight, tonight
Too bad, but it's the life you lead
You're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong
You know, you can't always see when you're right, you're right

Our youngest daughter is an incredible dancer. This year she chose to do a solo for competition season. She picked her song 2 years ago. Her song choice; “Vienna” by Billy Joel.

She performed it for the first time on Friday night in front of a large audience, and she was captivating! She explained to me that this song, and dance, is a love note from herself to her future self.

All you have to do in life, is improve what you’ve been given.

Fun Fact Trivia:

“Vienna” was released as a B-side of what song?

Answer:

According to American Songwriter, “Vienna” was a B-side of “Just the way you are” indicating that Joel likely believed the song’s destiny was to remain a deep cut, buried in his discography. Today, however, the tune is one of Joel’s most streamed songs. On Spotify, for example, “Vienna” is the second most played song from the Piano Man. How did this happen? “Vienna” simply grew on people; it aged well. And with a boost from the wide-reaching influence of social media and streaming platforms, “Vienna” has become one of Joel’s most beloved tunes
