Lyrics
If I should stay
I would only be in your way
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you every step of the way
And I will always love you
Leaving a relationship is arguably the most difficult relationship experience.
Every relationship has highs and lows. When the lows are not being restored and balanced, it may be time to evaluate what can be done to recover.
We should always give the relationship time and effort, always be willing to work on growth. If, after giving effort and time, the lows are not able to be overcome, it may be time to let go.
I find it so interesting that one of the most powerful love songs of all time, was not written about a romantic relationship. Dolly Parton wrote this song as a goodbye to her business partner. Her lyrics resonate with anyone who needs to permanently leave someone they love.
It's understanding that you're better off without this person having immediate access to you, if any at all. And from this place of acceptance, you're able to free up the attention and energy you were giving this person and put it toward things that actually bring you peace and joy.
Bittersweet memories
That is all I'm taking with me
So goodbye, please don't cry
We both know I'm not what you, you need
Whitney Houston’s rich vocal brings out the vulnerability of the moment. These elements go hand-in-hand beautifully.
This is a lovely song about love and loss. There is beauty in goodbye.
Bittersweet memories force us to acknowledge that the positive in our lives is never far from being devilishly entwined with something more difficult. We feel, in the presence of bittersweet memories, the pain of being flawed, error-prone, time-short and regretful humans.
We can hold on to bittersweet memories to remember both the good and bad times. Each experience can serve us as we move forward.
Lyrics
I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of
And I wish you joy and happiness
But above all this, I wish you love
What a generous, thoughtful way to to say goodbye.
At the beginning of each new year, I love to tell my friends and family “I wish you joy and happiness, but above all this, I wish you love.” Those lyrics feel like the kindest wish to bestow on others.
Right after those lyrics there is a silent pause followed by the dramatic down beat and key change; it brings goosebumps!!! This is the moment that stirs the soul and makes the heart race.
As if that crescendo weren’t enough, the vocal swoop at the very end of the song is the perfect ending. Every element of this song is masterfully accomplished.
My favorite element of the song is how well she is taking care of herself while she is enduring heartbreak. She is clear, honest and kind.
Two important goals that you should have are to be moderate and to be comfortable. This will make you a whole human being with spiritual energy naturally flowing through you.
Think about this…

Fun Fact Trivia:
What did the LA Times have to say about the key change after the third verse?
Answer; Chris Willman of the Los Angeles Times commented that the singer "has the goods to deliver on the tune's haunting beauty and resists overpowering it – until the finale, when the key change and stratospheric notes drain all the heart-rending sadness out of the song and make it sound like just another anthem of survival."
